Action Indonesia - Banteng

Action Indonesia is a global collaboration known as a Global Species Management Plan (GSMP), consisting of more than 50 organizations from Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Canada. The aim of this collaboration is to protect some of Indonesia’s unique and endangered species: anoa, banteng, Sumatran tiger, and babirusa.

GSMPs are international, cooperative conservation strategies focused on the long-term survival of species. These plans, overseen by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), bring together zoos, governments, and conservation organizations to combine skills and resources for maximum impact both in zoos (ex-situ) and in the wild (in-situ).

The Action Indonesia GSMP was established in 2016 to protect the anoa, banteng, Sumatran tiger, and babirusa from extinction.

In 2019, Action Indonesia GSMP partners introduced “Action Indonesia Day”, an annual event aimed at raising global awareness of the four species and enhancing communication and educational efforts about their conservation.

This initiative follows the “One Plan Approach” to species conservation, which involves the development of management strategies and conservation actions by all responsible parties for all populations of a species—whether they are inside or outside of their natural habitat. This means everyone involved in the conservation of a species works together, follows the same plan, and coordinates efforts toward a shared goal.

Through this global cooperation, Action Indonesia strives to ensure the survival of these unique Indonesian species by combining resources and expertise from organizations around the world.

Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation

There are several isolated populations of banteng in Indonesia, but no one truly knows how closely related they are. The Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation supports a research project aimed at determining the genetic diversity of the species and whether this knowledge can be used to, for example, exchange animals between populations to support conservation efforts.
