ARCAS Wildlife Animal Protection in Guatemala

Asociación de Rescate y Conservación de Vida Silvestre (ARCAS) is a Guatemalan nonprofit organization, founded in 1989 by local citizens concerned about the rapid loss of the country’s natural heritage, especially its wildlife.

The organization focuses on the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals, particularly those confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. ARCAS operates one of the largest and most complex wildlife rescue centers in the Americas and supports the enforcement of laws against wildlife trafficking.

Their main projects are located in Guatemala City, Petén, and the Hawaii region on the southern Pacific coast. In Petén, they manage a wildlife rescue center in the Maya Biosphere Reserve, while in the Hawaii region, the focus is on sea turtle and mangrove conservation.

ARCAS also offers volunteer opportunities for those who wish to contribute to the conservation of Guatemala’s biodiversity.

Each year, the organization receives between 400 and 600 animals, which undergo veterinary examination and stay at one of ARCAS’ centers before most are eventually released back into the wild. Animals that are not strong enough to survive on their own become part of breeding programs, where their offspring are later released into nature.

To support this important work, the Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation has chosen to fund the hiring of an additional veterinarian, which will enhance the organization’s capacity to care for the many animals arriving at the centers.
