Armonia

Asociación Armonía is a Bolivian non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of birds and their habitats in Bolivia. The organization focuses on research, conservation, and environmental education to safeguard the country’s unique biodiversity, especially endangered and endemic bird species.

Main Activities and Objectives:

Conservation of Threatened Bird Species Armonía works with iconic species such as:

Blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) – threatened by deforestation and the illegal pet trade.

Blue-throated macaw (Ara glaucogularis) – one of the rarest parrots in the world.

Red-fronted macaw (Ara rubrogenys) – a species found only in Bolivia.

Creation and Management of Nature Reserves – Armonía established the Barba Azul Nature Reserve, a key protected area for the Blue-throated macaw and savanna habitats in Bolivia’s lowlands.

Forest Restoration and Sustainable Agriculture – Armonía supports local communities by planting native trees and promoting more sustainable farming practices to reduce deforestation.

Research and Monitoring – The organization conducts scientific studies on bird populations, their migration patterns, and habitats to improve protection strategies.

Education and Community Engagement – Armonía works with schools and local groups to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity and bird conservation.

Collaboration and Partners - Asociación Armonía frequently collaborates with international organizations such as BirdLife International, research institutions, and local authorities to ensure the long-term protection of Bolivia’s birdlife.

Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation

In Bolivia, only around 600 Blue-throated macaws remain in the wild. One of the major challenges for this species is the declining number of broken palm trees used for nesting, due to agricultural expansion.

Asociación Armonía has two reserves in the macaws’ habitat, and Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation supports the project by funding the construction and renovation of nest boxes that the Blue-throated macaws accept as an alternative to the vanishing palm trees. Asociación Armonía has had great success with these nest boxes, and a significant portion of the current population has hatched in them.
