Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan

Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) is a leading NGO in Kazakhstan dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and the protection of endangered species and ecosystems in the country. ACBK is an official partner of BirdLife International and plays a key role in nature conservation across Central Asia.

Main Activities and Projects:

Conservation of Steppe Ecosystems – Kazakhstan’s vast steppes are home to several endangered species, such as the Sociable Lapwing (Vanellus gregarius), a critically endangered wader, and the Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica), which is critically endangered due to poaching and habitat destruction.

Establishment and Management of Protected Areas – ACBK works to map and protect important natural areas, including the expansive steppes of Central Kazakhstan and wetlands in Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Research and Monitoring – The organization monitors bird populations, mammals, and ecosystems through satellite tracking, field surveys, and data analysis. Special focus is placed on rare and endangered species such as the Caspian seal (Pusa caspica) and the Demoiselle crane (Grus virgo).

Reintroduction of Wild Horse Populations – ACBK works with international partners to reintroduce the Przewalski’s horse (Equus caballus przewalskii), the world’s last wild horse, to Kazakhstan’s steppes.

Combating Poaching and Illegal Wildlife Trade – The organization collaborates with authorities and local communities to combat illegal hunting and promote sustainable management of natural resources.

Education and Community Involvement – ACBK runs educational programs for schools and local communities to raise awareness of biodiversity and the importance of conservation.

Collaboration and Partners:

ACBK collaborates with organizations such as BirdLife International, Fauna & Flora International, Frankfurt Zoological Society, as well as the Kazakh government and international research institutions.

Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation

One of ACBK’s focus areas is the Przewalski’s horse. The species disappeared from Kazakhstan over 100 years ago, but efforts are now underway to bring it back to the golden steppes. Over the coming years, 35 horses from European zoos will be reintroduced to central Kazakhstan. Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation supports this project by funding the monitoring of the reintroduced horses for five years.

Previously, Givskud Zoo, as part of a European collaboration, also reintroduced a Przewalski’s horse to Mongolia, where it is thriving and has given birth to several foals.
