The Bird Protection Foundation
The Danish Birds Protection Foundation is a Danish nature conservation fund dedicated to the protection of birds and their habitats in Denmark. The foundation was established in 1966 by the Danish Ornithological Society (DOF) and today owns a number of important nature areas across the country.
Main Objectives and Activities:
Acquisition and Protection of Natural Areas – Fugleværnsfonden acquires and manages nature areas that are especially important for rare and endangered bird species. These areas are permanently protected and managed on the birds’ terms. The foundation owns and manages 24 bird reserves across Denmark.
Habitat Management and Restoration – The foundation works with grazing, scrub clearing, restoration of ponds, and wetland recovery to improve bird habitats. Some areas are managed with grazing animals like cows or horses to help maintain open landscapes.
Bird Protection and Biodiversity – Focus is placed on endangered species such as the ruff, white-tailed eagle, red-backed shrike, kingfisher, and black tern. The protected nature areas also benefit many other species of animals and plants.
Public Access and Birdwatching Experiences – Many of Fugleværnsfonden’s sites are equipped with trails, bird towers, and observation platforms, allowing visitors to experience nature without disturbing the birds. Guided tours are also organized by volunteer nature guides.
Cooperation with Landowners and Local Communities – The foundation collaborates with private landowners, municipalities, and other organizations to create better nature management practices.
Funding and Support – Fugleværnsfonden is an independent foundation, financed through private donations, grants, and member support from the Danish Ornithological Society.
Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation
Denmark’s nature is under significant pressure, and it is crucial to create much more space for wildlife. That is why Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation supports Fugleværnsfonden’s work with the acquisition and management of nature areas.
