Ibream - Pygmy Hippo
The Institute for Breeding Rare and Endangered African Mammals (IBREAM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the breeding and conservation of rare and endangered African mammals. The institute primarily focuses on scientific research, breeding programs, and the reintroduction of endangered species into their natural habitats.
Their work includes:
Breeding programs to increase the population of rare African mammals.
Genetic research to ensure healthy and sustainable populations.
Collaboration with zoos and wildlife reserves to strengthen breeding and conservation efforts.
In-situ conservation, working to reintroduce endangered species into their natural environments.
Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation – The pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) is a highly endangered species, but also one that is still poorly understood in the wild. Therefore, the Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation supports IBREAM by funding the salaries of two local Ivorians who assist in gathering knowledge about these elusive animals. The goal is, among other things, to equip more pygmy hippos with GPS collars to study their movements and behavior.
