Limbe Wildlife Center
The Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) is a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Cameroon, dedicated to the protection of endangered African species, with a particular focus on primates. It was established in 1993 as a collaboration between the Cameroonian government and the NGO Pandrillus Foundation. The center serves both as a wildlife rescue facility and an education and conservation project.
Main Goals and Activities:
Rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife – LWC cares for orphaned and confiscated animals, often victims of poaching, illegal wildlife trade, or habitat destruction. Their primary focus is on primates, such as chimpanzees, drills, and mandrills, but they also work with other animals like pangolins, parrots, and turtles.
Protection of endangered primates – The center specializes in protecting rare and endangered African monkeys and great apes, including:
Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)
Drills (Mandrillus leucophaeus) – one of the world’s most endangered primates
Mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx)
Black-and-white colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza)
The goal is to rehabilitate and reintroduce the animals into safe, protected areas.
Combating the illegal wildlife trade – LWC works closely with Cameroonian authorities to combat wildlife trafficking and bushmeat hunting. They raise and care for confiscated orphan animals left behind after hunting incidents.
Education and community involvement – The center runs environmental education programs for local schools, communities, and tourists. The aim is to raise awareness about biodiversity and animal welfare. They also support alternative livelihood projects to help locals find sustainable income sources that do not harm nature.
Research and conservation projects – LWC collaborates with researchers and other organizations to study and monitor primates, as well as assess their potential for successful reintroduction into the wild.
Collaboration and partners – Limbe Wildlife Centre works with:
Cameroon’s Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF)
International NGOs such as Pandrillus Foundation, PASA (Pan African Sanctuary Alliance), and the Jane Goodall Institute
Zoos and research institutions that support the center financially and scientifically.
Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation – Since 2009, the Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation has supported the protection of gorillas in Cameroon. This support has included funding for the salaries of three educators at the Limbe Wildlife Centre, as well as contributions to education and conference participation.
The foundation has also provided support for the treatment and release of a large number of confiscated African grey parrots, along with funding for the establishment of an aviary for the birds.
