PASA

The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) is a coalition of 23 rescue centers and sanctuaries in 13 African countries, working to protect endangered primates such as chimpanzees, gorillas, baboons, and other monkey species. The organization was founded in 2000 and is the largest alliance of primate centers in Africa.

Main Goals and Activities:

Rescue and rehabilitation of primates – PASA member centers care for orphaned and confiscated primates, often rescued from poaching or the illegal wildlife trade. The animals receive medical care, socialization, and rehabilitation, with the hope of eventual release back into the wild.

Combating illegal trade and poaching – PASA works with governments and NGOs to stop illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking. They help enforce laws protecting primates across Africa.

Conservation of natural habitats – PASA supports the protection of rainforests and savannas where primates live. They help local communities develop sustainable livelihoods to reduce reliance on hunting or selling primates.

Education and community engagement – PASA member centers educate schoolchildren, local communities, and tourists about the importance of primate conservation. They run awareness campaigns to discourage the keeping of wild animals as pets.

Research and monitoring – Members conduct behavioral and ecological research on rescued primates. These studies help improve strategies to protect endangered species.

Threats to Africa’s Primates:

Bushmeat trade – Chimpanzees and other primates are hunted for meat.

Illegal pet trade – Young primates are captured and sold as exotic pets.

Deforestation – Loss of habitat due to agriculture, mining, and logging.

Disease – Ebola and other diseases pose serious threats to wild primates.

Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation – We have chosen to support the development, printing, and distribution of educational materials in the form of a children’s book titled “Mama P”. The book explains the reasons why so many monkeys end up in sanctuaries and how efforts are made to protect them.
