Programma Punta San Juan
Program Punta San Juan (PPSJ) is a conservation and research initiative in Peru, focusing on the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems, particularly in the Punta San Juan area, located in the Ica region along the Pacific coast.
Goals and Activities:
Biodiversity protection – The area is home to one of the largest colonies of the endangered Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti), as well as a significant population of South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) and sea lions (Otaria flavescens).
Scientific research – PPSJ conducts long-term monitoring programs of marine mammals and seabirds, including studies on population dynamics, behavior, feeding habits, and the impacts of climate change.
Sustainable guano harvesting – The region has a long history of guano (bird droppings) extraction, and the program works to ensure sustainable harvesting practices that do not harm local wildlife populations.
Education – PPSJ collaborates with schools, local communities, and authorities to raise awareness about the importance of marine environments and the need for their protection.
The program is part of a larger network of nature reserves and conservation initiatives along the Peruvian coast and often collaborates with research institutions, NGOs, and the Peruvian government.
