Proyect Mono Arana – Spider Monkey Project

Proyecto Mono Araña means “Spider Monkey Project” and is a nature conservation organization focused on the protection and restoration of the Central American brown spider monkey (Ateles hybridus), an endangered primate species that lives in Central and South America.

Main goals of the project:

Protection of spider monkeys and their habitats -The project aims to conserve the species in the tropical forest of the Caparo Forest Reserve in Venezuela. One of the main issues is that the forest is being reduced and fragmented into small patches. It is now only 1/25th of its original size. The project conducts research on the remaining population in order to better protect it. Additionally, they work on replanting some of the lost forest.

Education – They collaborate with local communities to promote sustainable livelihoods and reduce threats such as deforestation and hunting.

Why is the project important?

The Central American spider monkey is critically endangered due to deforestation, hunting, and the illegal pet trade. Conservation efforts like Proyecto Mono Araña are crucial to prevent the species from disappearing from the wild.

Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation

The foundation supports the reforestation of the rainforest, which will help different groups of spider monkeys reconnect with each other.
