Save the Rhino
Save the Rhino is an international charity organization dedicated to protecting and conserving the world’s rhinoceros species. Founded in 1994 and based in the United Kingdom, its mission is to secure a future for all five rhino species by supporting conservation projects in Africa and Asia.
What does Save the Rhino do?
Combatting poaching – Supports ranger patrols, training, and equipment to protect rhinos from poachers. Works with intelligence services to help stop the illegal trade in rhino horn.
Habitat protection – Helps preserve and expand protected areas where rhinos live. Collaborate with local authorities and organizations to maintain healthy ecosystems.
Community support –
Promotes sustainable development and alternative livelihoods to reduce reliance on poaching. Educates and engages local communities in rhino conservation efforts.
Research and monitoring – Supports scientific studies on rhino populations, health, and behavior.
Funds technological solutions, including GPS tracking and DNA analysis, to fight poaching.
Which rhino species do they protect?
Save the Rhino works to protect all five rhino species:
White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum)
Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis)
Greater one-horned/Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis)
Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis)
Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus)
Why is this important?
Rhinos are critically endangered due to poaching and habitat loss. Their horns are highly sought after on illegal markets, especially in parts of Asia. Save the Rhino is committed to ensuring that future generations can experience these majestic animals in the wild.
Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation – In South Africa, the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is home to some of the most important populations of white and black rhinos in Africa. As poaching pressure increases in the region, the foundation supports the increased presence of rangers in the park, specifically their work in tracking rhinos and studying their population structure and movement patterns.
