Selamatkan Yaki

Selamatkan Yaki is a conservation organization in Indonesia working to protect the endangered Sulawesi crested black macaque (Macaca nigra), also known as the yaki, which is found only on Sulawesi. The organization is a collaboration between local authorities, researchers, and international NGOs, and is based in North Sulawesi.

Main Goals and Activities:

Protection of the crested black macaque and its habitat – The Sulawesi macaque is critically endangered due to deforestation, hunting, and illegal trade. The organization works to conserve and restore the rainforests of Sulawesi, especially within the Tangkoko Nature Reserve, home to some of the last remaining wild populations.

Combating hunting and illegal trade – The monkeys are hunted for meat and kept as pets, despite being legally protected in Indonesia. Selamatkan Yaki works with authorities to improve law enforcement and stop illegal hunting.

Education and community engagement – The organization runs educational programs in schools, teaching children and youth about biodiversity and the importance of protecting Sulawesi macaques. They collaborate with local communities to develop alternative livelihoods, reducing dependence on hunting and deforestation.

Ecotourism as a conservation tool – Selamatkan Yaki promotes sustainable tourism, enabling visitors to observe the macaques in their natural habitat. Ecotourism revenues help support local communities and create incentives to protect the species.

Research and monitoring – The organization conducts field surveys of macaque populations, including data on population numbers, behavior, and threats. They partner with researchers and universities to better understand the species’ ecology and conservation needs.

Givskud Zoo Nature Foundation – The foundation supports Selamatkan Yaki’s efforts to raise awareness about the importance of the macaques for Sulawesi’s ecosystems and why they should not be captured or consumed. The foundation has, for example, donated a vehicle, making it possible to reach remote villages in macaque habitat areas.
